The edge where two lives meet — carried with you, forever.
缘 Yuán · Affinity — an original Chinese calligraphy tattoo design in clerical script, hand-rendered as preserved in the Xiping Stone Classics of 175 CE — the stone-canonical standard of Han calligraphy, in the hand of Cai Yong (133–192 CE). Originally the silk hem of a garment: the edge where two lives meet.
In Chinese thought, yuán means the bond — affinity, connection, the tie between two lives — as Tao Yuanming's Peach Blossom Spring puts it: "He followed the stream, and forgot how far he had come."
